What is value betting?
Why the price matters more than the winner.
Updated 4 Oct 2026
A value bet is one where the true probability of an outcome is higher than the probability implied by the odds.
If a team has a 50% chance of winning, fair odds are 2.00. Backing them at 2.20 is value — over many bets you'd expect to profit — even though they'll lose half the time.
Closing line value
Odds usually shorten towards the event start as information arrives. Consistently getting a better price than the closing odds is one of the strongest signs of a skilled bettor.
Practical tips
- Shop around: price differences between bookmakers add up.
- Follow tips quickly — prices move.
- Judge results over hundreds of bets, not dozens.
